Review: Here Come The Classics: Volume Six - Classic Film Themes
2.5 / 5 Stars
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has recently released a new addition to their series of albums to expose the general public to classical music: Volume 6, Classic Film Themes. With thirteen films represented on the album, there is plenty of variety, but there is nothing really "classic" about the selections. The oldest film, Out of Africa, isn't even 20 years old. It's almost like "the best of the past decade" - but even then, not the best.
Beginning with a fun (albeit slightly faster) rendition of Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme, the orchestra then tries to take on Hans Zimmer's Gladiator - but loses. The problem is that anytime someone tries to do a re-recording of a Zimmer score, they just don't get the same sound, because all the synths are missing. The re-recording of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (this is a British release, mind you) is solid, but a tad slow in "Harry's Wondrous World". Probably one of the best tracks on the album, the Royal Philharmonic does an excellent job with the "Breaking of the Fellowship" from Howard Shore's score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
I'm not sure why Stephen Warbeck's score to Shakespeare in Love is held in such high regard. It's a solid score, and very enjoyable - but to give it over ten minutes of album space (and then follow it up with a rather disappointing rendition of Elfman's Batman that runs a scant 2:39) seems to be a bit much. John Barry's Out of Africa gets respectful re-recording here, but then we're followed up with an enslaught of cheesy pop renditions of songs: "License to Kill", "I Will Always Love You", "The Windmills of Your Mind", "Everything I Do I Do It For You". It's a little too hammy, and I feel they could have put some actual classic film scores here (or anything prior to 1984)!
Schindler's List is well done, and the violin solo by Rolf Wilson is noteworthy. It's not like the original, but hey - what re-recording is? Finally, the album ends with Titanic. It starts off like traditional score, but just when you thought it was going to be a nice suite, it devolves into another orchestral pop version of the Celine Dion song. Overall, this is a solid album that's enjoyable to listen to, and if you're a fan of cheesy-pop orchestral versions of songs, the last half will strongly appeal to you. But I do wish they put some older classic film scores on here.
